The Sabbaticals Scheme
The Sabbaticals Scheme aims to increase the number of practitioners able to teach or train through the medium of Welsh or bilingually.
What is the aim of this scheme?
It offers Welsh language and pedagogical training to those wishing to teach, lecture or train through the medium of Welsh or bilingually, who need the confidence and specialist terminology to do so.
The Scheme gives teachers, lecturers and trainers the opportunity to:
• improve their Welsh language skills;
• acquire knowledge of terminology specific to their subject area and programme;
• gain awareness and confidence in using Welsh-medium and bilingual methodologies.
Who can apply?
The scheme is open to primary and secondary school teachers, further education lecturers and work-based learning training providers currently working full-time or part-time in Wales. Supply staff and Higher Education staff may also be considered subject to certain conditions.
When can applications be made?
We are now inviting applications and expressions of interest for the following course:
19 April - 16 July 2010 (closing date 12 February 2010).
For more information or to request an application pack, contact the Sabbaticals Team:

E-mail: SabbaticalScheme@wales.gsi.gov.uk
Where will the training take place?
The courses are held in two locations: University of Wales, Bangor and at Cardiff University. It is expected that applicants will travel daily to the training course, though any cases of difficulty will be considered. Daily start times for the course will be late enough to accommodate those travelling from some distance.
Based upon practitioner feedback, we are also offering a distance learning option, with a residential element, in April 2009.
What will Sabbaticals payments cover?
• Supply cover payable to the school/college/institution/employer.
• Reasonable travel costs at the rate of 40p per mile for the first 100 miles (20p thereafter) for car travel or receipts for public transport.
• Overnight accommodation costs where absolutely necessary and by prior approval for attendance at the course.
• Accommodation and subsistence costs for any residential course deemed necessary for completion of the training.
• Supply cover for three days' equivalent after completion of the initial block of three months' training, in order to ensure that the applicant has sufficient time to prepare resources and lesson plans in Welsh and can receive follow-up workshops/tuition/methodological help.
There will be no course fees for the initial period, as these will be paid directly by the Welsh Assembly Government to the training provider.
