Key Stage 2: Welsh Language Training for Y5 and Y6 Teachers: Language Tools for Aiming High in Welsh
Y5 and Y6: Language Tools for Aiming High in Welsh: Challenging myself and my learners to develop transferrable language skills Prior language experience is essential. This three-day language course provides Year 5 + 6 teachers and HLTAs with an opportunity to develop and extend the following: • The present tense in 1st, 2nd and 3rd person singular and plural forms; • Further development of the past tense possibly introducing third person past tense; • Introduction to some conditional tense phrases; • Ability to express opinions, give more complex reasons; express needs and wishes; and • Use of Welsh throughout the school day
Target Group: Year 5 + 6 teachers / HLTAs with prior language experience, wishing to develop their skills to meet the needs of learners at a higher level.
Outcomes and Benefits for the Target Group • Delegates will develop their linguistic skills; • They will know which language patterns to use to develop and progress learners’ oracy, reading and writing skills; and • Delegates on the Y5/6 course will develop their linguistic skills to confidently meet the needs of learners at L5+ and will be able to use Welsh language skills in the classroom and throughout the school day in a variety of situations and contexts.
Outcomes and Benefits for Learners in School(s) • Learners will benefit from teachers’ enhanced linguistic skills leading to more effective Welsh teaching; • Learners will be enabled to develop their Welsh language skills to the appropriate level and challenged to move beyond the expected level; • They will be given opportunities to hear and use Welsh language skills throughout the school day; and • They will become more confident and have improved self-esteem.
