Trickles and Droplets - Effective Teaching and Learning of Mathematics in Year 1
This two-day course provides an opportunity for teachers to focus on effective planning, teaching and formative assessment in year 1 of the Foundation Phase as well as achieving an appropriate daily balance between focused teaching and well-planned enhanced and continuous provision.
Training on day 1 will encourage teachers to see the bigger picture and will focus on effective planning and teaching of key mathematical concepts in year 1. Practical and engaging mathematics activities will be demonstrated, focusing on the key concepts and areas of mathematics that present particular difficulties for pupils in year 1. Teachers will receive a handbook which will support the process of planning and provide examples of rich tasks. Training on day 2 will focus particularly on developing problem solving and reasoning skills as well as themes and projects which are rich in numeracy.
• Becoming more aware of the connections within the number strand and other areas of mathematics; • Improving procedures for formative assessment and ensure teaching takes account of planning for progression; • Improving pupils’ number, reasoning and problem solving skills through the use of effective visual images and resources which support development of conceptual understanding and engage pupils in the learning activities; • Gaining a better understanding of ways in which the four core purposes within ‘Successful Futures’ can be developed through the context of mathematical activities.
