Developing Mental Strategies in Key Stage 2 (Mathematics)
This two-day course will be suitable for teachers new to the school or consortium, and those moving from Foundation Phase to key stage 2. It will support schools in maintaining a clear focus on national and consortium priorities for raising standards in number. Where whole-school training has already been provided, this training will ensure those new to the school have an opportunity to receive the same guidance on progression and effective teaching in mathematics.
 
The day provides a detailed overview of the mental skills and strategies pupils need to develop at levels 3 and 4, together with discussions to enable teachers to make effective use of national and EAS guidance materials.
 
A high emphasis will be placed on the effective use of visual resources to support pupils’ understanding, as well as frequent pupil interaction and discussion, and effective formative assessment based on a clear knowledge of pupils’ strengths and weaknesses.
