International Languages in the Primary – A Practice Sharing Event Part of the EAS Languages Festival
Summary / Crynodeb
A showcase event and practical workshop for primary teachers to see the latest developments in primary pilot projects and resources that forms part of the Welsh Government’s Global Futures strategy key actions to “develop pilots for modern foreign language learning in key stage 2 and analyse which initiatives provide successful models which will allow modern foreign languages to be introduced to the primary curriculum in line with the Curriculum for Wales area of learning (AOLE) for ‘Language, Literacy and Communication’.”

As a result of the event, primary teachers should be able start thinking about incorporating international languages within their school with the four purposes of the new curriculum in mind:

• See examples how schools have started to pilot approaches to deliver aspects of modern foreign languages in line with the Curriculum for Wales area of learning (AOLE) for ‘Language, Literacy and Communication’.
• Applying the latest in best practice methodologies across languages to develop better linguists and communicators.
• By integrating more thinking skills to help develop ambitious, capable learners who are building up a body of knowledge and have the skills to connect and apply that knowledge in different language contexts

Outcomes and Benefits for Learners in School(s) / Deilliannau a Buddiannau i’r Dysgwyr

As a result of the event, learners in school will be provided with opportunities to display the characteristics of the four purposes by:

• Having access to stimulating learning environments and resources to develop enterprising and creative contributors.
• To help ‘develop ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world’ through the appreciation of other languages and cultures.
• Be given opportunities to be ambitious, capable learners who are able to develop and display their understanding of the way the language works through a variety of strategies.
• Be engaged in meaningful learning and develop as healthy, confident individuals who communicate effectively in different forms and settings.
